Icon of a person examining dnaThe epidemiology field is focused on surveillance and investigation of data trends in health and disease. Epidemiologists investigate the causes of disease and other public health problems to prevent them from spreading or happening again.

Employers often include: City and state government, hospitals, medical foundations, and large employers like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The BLS estimates a 5% growth from 2018 – 2028 in this industry (as fast as average).*

Median salary: $70,820.*


Epidemiology Careers:

Nutritional Epidemiologist

Nutritional epidemiologists investigate how diet affects health and disease in human populations, or the science of public health nutrition.

Chronic Disease Epidemiologist

Chronic disease epidemiologists examine the natural history of chronic health disorders to then explore options for the treatment of these disorders and diseases.

Molecular Epidemiologist

Molecular epidemiologists study molecular or genetic markers to trace the development of a disease in a population to understand transmission, as well as the population structure and evolution of bacterial pathogens.
